Germany’s GROW Program offers research grants for projects aligned with the UN’s global challenges

Researchers from the Global South can apply until April 30 for a program focused on the global priorities of the United Nations

The German Academic Exchange Service has opened applications for the GROW Program (Global Research Opportunities for the South), a new initiative aimed at strengthening research networks and academic mobility between Germany and countries in the Global South. With Brazil among the eligible countries, the call offers two funding modalities for stays at German universities and research institutes.

The program is structured to support different stages of the academic career. In the “Research stays for cooperation and networking” modality, researchers can apply for stays of one to two months to establish connections, plan joint projects, and explore shared research interests. The “Research stays” modality allows doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members to carry out individual projects lasting two to six months, with a focus on applying results in their home institutions.

Grant amounts vary according to experience level: doctoral and postdoctoral researchers receive €1,400 per month, while assistant and full professors may receive up to €2,150 monthly. The benefits package also includes health insurance and a travel allowance.

One of GROW’s key features is its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. The program prioritizes projects that contribute to concrete solutions in areas such as health, education, climate change, and governance—central themes for the global agenda and for countries like Brazil.

In addition, the initiative adopts an academic sustainability approach: upon returning to their home countries, fellows are expected to disseminate the knowledge and methods acquired, strengthening teaching and research within their institutions.

The call does not require proof of language proficiency and explicitly encourages applications from women and researchers from historically underrepresented groups or regions. Eligible applicants include doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members affiliated with higher education institutions or research centers in Brazil.

To support applicants, DAAD Brazil will host two online advisory sessions on April 7 and 14 at 5:00 PM (Brasília time) via Webex to clarify doubts about the call and application process.

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the DAAD portal by April 30, 2026. Funded stays must begin in 2026 and be completed by January 31, 2027. The full call is available on the DAAD website.

REINTER emphasizes that this is an independent opportunity. While supporting its dissemination, it is not responsible for the application process.
