The agreement brings together institutions from different countries to strengthen scientific cooperation and research in marine sciences.

The Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), through its participation in the China–Portuguese-Speaking Countries Ocean Research Alliance, is part of an international initiative aimed at strengthening academic exchange and scientific cooperation in the field of marine sciences.

Proposed by the University of Macau in 2022, the Alliance brings together universities and research institutions from China and Portuguese-speaking countries, including Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and Cabo Verde. The initiative seeks to combine scientific expertise, infrastructure, and institutional resources to expand international collaboration on ocean-related research.

The agreement identifies marine environmental sciences and ecology, natural disasters, ocean and coastal dynamics, and ocean engineering as priority areas for cooperation. Planned activities include exchanges of faculty members and researchers, the joint organization of academic conferences, seminars, and courses, and the preparation of joint funding proposals for research projects.

The agreement also provides for resource sharing and joint development, the training of qualified professionals, collaborative innovation, and the promotion of socially relevant initiatives related to marine sciences.

Specific cooperation activities will be subject to negotiation and formalization by the participating institutions, with their respective rights and obligations defined in detailed agreements. The agreement establishes a five-year term, in accordance with the conditions set out in the document.

FURG's participation in this initiative strengthens the international dimension of its academic and scientific activities, fostering collaborative networks with foreign institutions and expanding opportunities for joint research in an area of strategic importance to the university.

The International Relations Secretariat (REINTER) supports FURG's internationalization initiatives, contributing to stronger institutional relations and expanded cooperation with international partners.
