5th International Forum on Human Rights of the AUGM Chair to be hosted at FURG

The event will bring together the academic community from various Latin American countries to debate human rights and climate emergencies.

The Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) has been chosen to host the fifth edition of the International Forum on Human Rights of the Human Rights Chair of the Association of Universities of the Montevideo Group (AUGM). The event will take place on December 2–4, 2025, at the Carreiros Campus, gathering researchers and students from several Latin American countries.

With the theme “Human Rights and Climate Emergencies,” the Forum will discuss the contemporary challenges posed by the global environmental crisis and its implications for the fundamental rights of populations, especially the most vulnerable. Activities will include lectures, round tables, thematic working groups, cultural activities, and a photography exhibition.

The Forum is one of the main initiatives of the AUGM Chair, created in 2020 to promote a culture of human rights through the integration of researchers. Previous editions were held in institutions in Chile, Brazil, and Argentina, fostering debates on democracy, development, and social justice. FURG was chosen as the host due to the relevance of the topic in insular and coastal states, and the university’s experience in extreme climate events, such as the floods that affected Rio Grande do Sul in 2024.

This edition’s Working Groups will be organized as follows:

  • WG1: Environmental Education and Climate Emergencies

  • WG2: Environmental Justice, Social Inequalities, and Environmental Racism

  • WG3: Human Rights, Climate Emergencies, and Gender

  • WG4: University Extension in Times of Climate Emergencies

  • WG5: Human Rights, Emergencies of the Rights of Nature, and Public Policies

Submissions may be made until October 19, 2025, in Portuguese or Spanish, and the results will be announced in October. Those interested in participating may submit abstracts of 300 to 500 words, in Portuguese or Spanish. Registrations for the general public will be available until November 16.

Registrations must be completed through this link.

Official information, including the full program, will soon be published on the 5th International Forum on Human Rights page on the REINTER website: reinter.furg.br/v-forum-augm. Other questions about the event can be addressed via email at vforumdh@furg.br.
