FURG and LACNIC sign a cooperation agreement to develop research on the Internet

FURG is the only institution in Brazil chosen to be part of LACNIC's applied research program.

Last Tuesday, December 6, FURG and LACNIC - Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean, signed an institutional cooperation agreement for the development of scientific and technological research.

The purpose of the agreement is to improve the Internet's interconnection and routing infrastructure, with a focus on performance, resiliency and security aspects.

In the last month of August, after LACNIC identified the relevance and impact of the projects developed at FURG for the operation of the Internet, the university, through Professor Dr. Pedro de Botelho Marcos (C3), received an invitation to join LACNIC's Applied Research Program.

The program is an initiative to strengthen relations between the network operation community and the academic sector through the development of joint research. LACNIC invited only four institutions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, with FURG being one of them and the only Brazilian chosen.

The signed agreement foresees subsidies for the participation of FURG professors and students in technical events promoted by LACNIC, the direct exchange of knowledge between LACNIC's operations and research team and FURG researchers, as well as the possibility of promoting the development of research activities of undergraduate and graduate students.

With the signing of the term, the LACNIC team and the FURG researchers will begin cooperation activities. The first of them is scheduled for next Friday, the 16th, with a meeting to discuss and plan the research.

FURG and LACNIC cooperation history

FURG and LACNIC established their first interactions in 2020, through the approval of projects coordinated by Professor Pedro in LACNIC's funding calls. The projects were selected within the FRIDA program, an initiative by LACNIC to support projects that contribute to the consolidation of a global, open, stable and secure Internet.

Research focused on improving aspects of traffic engineering and interconnection, essential in the operation of the networks that make up the Internet. In addition to the coordination of FURG, these projects had the participation of researchers from the University of Waikato (New Zealand), the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Germany), the Queen Mary University of London (United Kingdom), and the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis - CAIDA (United States).

During its execution, the LACNIC/FRIDA program provided resources for the purchase of equipment, scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as assistance for participation in events.

FURG é a única instituição do Brasil escolhida para fazer parte do programa de pesquisa aplicada do LACNIC

Na última terça-feira, 6 de dezembro, a FURG e o LACNIC - Registro de Endereçamento da Internet para a América Latina e o Caribe, assinaram um acordo de cooperação institucional para desenvolvimento de pesquisas científicas e tecnológicas. 

O acordo tem como objetivo aprimorar a infraestrutura de interconexão e roteamento da Internet, com foco em aspectos de desempenho, resiliência  e segurança.

No último mês de agosto, a partir da identificação por parte do LACNIC da relevância e do impacto dos projetos desenvolvidos na FURG para a operação da Internet, a universidade, através do professor Dr. Pedro de Botelho Marcos (C3), recebeu o convite para integrar o Programa de Pesquisa Aplicada do LACNIC.

O programa é uma iniciativa para estreitar relações da comunidade de operação de redes com o setor acadêmico através do desenvolvimento de pesquisas conjuntas. O LACNIC realizou o convite para somente quatro instituições em toda América Latina e Caribe, sendo a FURG uma delas e a única brasileira escolhida.

O acordo assinado prevê subsídios para participação de professores e alunos da FURG em eventos técnicos promovidos pelo LACNIC, a troca de conhecimentos diretos entre a equipe de operações e pesquisa do LACNIC com os pesquisadores da FURG, bem como a possibilidade de fomento para o desenvolvimento das atividades de pesquisa de alunos de graduação e pós-graduação.

Com a assinatura do termo, a equipe do LACNIC e os pesquisadores da FURG darão início às atividades de cooperação. A primeira delas está prevista para a próxima sexta-feira, dia 16, com uma reunião para discussão e planejamento das pesquisas. 

Histórico de cooperação FURG e LACNIC

A FURG e o LACNIC estabeleceram suas primeiras interações no ano de 2020, através da aprovação de projetos coordenados pelo professor Pedro em chamadas de fomento do LACNIC. Os projetos foram selecionados dentro do programa FRIDA, uma iniciativa do LACNIC para apoiar projetos que contribuam para a consolidação de uma Internet global, aberta, estável e segura. 

As pesquisas focaram em aprimorar aspectos de engenharia de tráfego e interconexão, essenciais na operação das redes que compõem a Internet. Além da coordenação da FURG, esses projetos contaram com a participação de pesquisadores da University of Waikato (Nova Zelândia), do Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Alemanha), da Queen Mary University of London (Reino Unido), e do Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis - CAIDA (Estados Unidos). 

Durante suas execuções, o programa LACNIC/FRIDA disponibilizou recursos para compra de equipamentos, bolsas para estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação, bem como auxílio para participação em eventos.
